Rationalizing Medical Work: Decision-Support Techniques and Medical Practices by Marc Berg, Our response to the skyrocketing cost and nonuniform delivery of medical care has been a call for the rationalizing of medical practice through decision-support techniques. These tools, which include protocols, decision analysis, and expert systems, have generated much debate. Advocates argue that they will make medical practice more rational, more uniform, and more efficient and that they will transform the "art" of medical work into a "science." Critics argue that formal tools cannot and should not supplant humans in most real-life tasks. Marc Berg takes the issues raised by advocates and critics as points of departure for investigation, rather than as positions to choose from. Drawing on insights and methodologies from science and technology studies, he attempts to understand what "rationalizing medical practices" means: what these tools do and how they work in concrete medical practices. Rather than take a stand for or against decision-support techniques, he shows how they transform medical practices and discusses what is gained and what is lost. Berg investigates how new discourses on medical work and its problems are linked to the development of decision-support tools. Studying the construction of several individual technologies, he looks at what medical work consists of and how the new technologies figure in and transform it. Although he focuses on decision-support techniques in the field of medicine, the issues he raises are relevant wherever rationalizing techniques are being debated or constructed. Touching upon broader issues of standardization, universality, localization, and the politics of technology, Berg addresses problems that are central to medical sociology, technology studies, and tool design.
Managing Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Technology-Based Firms by Michael J. C. Martin, While innovation may be the lifeblood of technology based industry, it does not guarantee success to the individual firm within it. The ability to bring useful and desirable products to market in a timely, cost-effective fashion requires the unique talents of managers armed with an arsenal of modern principles and methodologies specifically geared to the technology invention and innovation process. But even in technology based firms, many managers have only scant technical background, while scientists and engineers may have little or no management training. And courses on managing technology based firms are currently taught only in a meager handful of universities. This book grew out of Michael J. C. Martin's experiences developing and teaching courses in managing technological innovation-entrepreneurship to business, engineering, and science students. It provides a dynamic framework within which managers from virtually any professional background can develop efficient, highly productive work systems guaranteed to maximize a high-tech firm's competitive edge. Throughout, the emphasis is on leveraging a company's strategic advantage. To that end, the author provides a host of "battle-tested" tools of the trade, including technology development programs, industry- and market-specific strategic plans, R&D project planning techniques, socioeconomic forecasting and market analysis techniques, and techniques for matching company capabilities with customer and product demands. All of the tools and techniques presented are applicable to the development of a broad range of products, from small high-tech consumer goods to large and complex systems such as aircraft and heavy weapons technology. Anindispensable survival tool in today's hypercompetitive international high-tech marketplace, Managing Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Technology Based Firms is must reading for industrial engineers, project managers, and R&D managers.
Technology roadmapping - Technology roadmapping is a technology management tool that attempts to plan and forecast the necessary steps toward achieving one or more technology goals. Technology roadmaps are different from project plans in that roadmaps attempt to emphasize the uncertainty in the forecast rather than create a linked set of tasks. Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities - The Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities or IATH is a research unit of the University of Virginia. Its goal is to explore and develop information technology as a tool for scholarly humanities research. Open Space Technology - Open Space Technology is a way to convene people for a conference, retreat or meeting. "Technology" in this case means 'tool' - a process; a method. Bernie Dodge - Bernie Dodge is the creator of the WebQuest, an information technology education tool, and QuestGarden, an online authoring tool and community of practice for WebQuest development. He is a Professor of Educational Technology at San Diego State University.
